Halo Hoops

Dave and Leslie Davies founded Halo Hoops in 2000.  They were married in 1997 and live in Wilmington, NC with their three young boys, Skyler, Aidan and Trent.  They’re expecting a fourth child in October 2010.

DAVE DAVIES, Dir. of Programs

• Coaching Experience: Assistant and Head Coach at North Florida Christian Varsity Boys Basketball, Head Coach at Crook County High School Varsity Boys Basketball, various summer camps including Florida State University Women’s Basketball
• Hobbies: Golfing, camping, wrestling with his sons

LESLIE DAVIES, Dir. of Operations

• Hometown:  Belvidere, IL
• Education: High School diploma from Belvidere High School, Bachelors degree in English with minor in Communications from Northern Illinois University
• Playing Experience:  Northern Illinois University, Athletes In Action, Lakeside (Australia)
• Coaching Experience:  Assistant at St. Joseph’s College (IN), Assistant at Florida State University
• Hobbies: Reading, writing, running

GRAY BOONE, Administrative Assistant

• Family: Married to Dereck, has 2 children-Brandon and Mia
• Hometown: Greensboro, NC,  has been Wilmington resident for 16 yrs
• Education: Mt. Tabor High School, Bachelors degree in Human Services from Elon University
• Hobbies: Softball, walking, playing with dogs Tar & Tater
• Volunteer Activities: Halo Special Needs Clinic, Holly Tree Elementary School, Roland Grise Middle School, NHC Relay for Life

JULIE BLACKBURN, Speed Training Specialist

• Family: Married to Barry, has 3 children - Anna, John and Jenna
• Experience: Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education, American College of Sports Medicine, Health and Fitness Specialist, National Academy of Sports Medicine, Health and Fitness, pending certification in Sports Performance Enhancement

KELLY WILLIS, U14 Boys Head Coach

• Family:  Married to wife for 16 yrs, has 2 children
• Current Job: Broker/Realtor with Century 21 Sweyer and Associates
• Playing Experience:  West Carteret High School-3 yr starter and Co-Captain, State 3A Champions in 1985
• Coaching Experience: 12+ years of recreational leagues in Wilmington and Greenville, East Carolina University summer camps
• Hobbies: Spending time with family, playing sports, coaching, church activities

JERMAINE SHAW, U13 Boys Head Coach

• Playing Experience: E.A. Laney High School-2 yr Varsity starter, Livingstone College, Marine Corps- 2 yrs All Marine Team
• Coaching Experience: Charlotte Stars AAU-2 yrs, Wilmington Boys and Girls Club 15-17 yr olds, Cape Fear Optimist baseball, Pop Warner Cowboys (Coach and President)
• Why I coach with Halo Hoops: “I want to teach basketball and instill the qualities of teamwork, work ethic and camaraderie that these young players will remember for a lifetime.”

RANDY JOHNSON, U12 Boys Head Coach

• Family: Married to Kim for 12 yrs, has 2 children-11 yr old son Xavier and 10 yr old daughter Sarah
• Playing Experience: Div. 2 National Championship with Wagner College (Football)
• Coaching Experience: Matawan/Aberdeen Junior High School Basketball Program in New Jersey - won 5 Division and Conference Championships and qualified for Tournament of Roses 6 out of 7 years, Matawan HS - 6 yrs in state playoffs
• Why I coach with Halo Hoops: “The Halo Hoops program allows me to teach kids the proper way to play and learn life lessons through sports.”

SCOTT SURRATT, U11 Boys Head Coach

• Family:  Married to wife for 13 yrs, has 2 children-son Noah and daughter Mackenzie

• Hobbies: Basketball, fitness/exercise training, triathlons, golf, softball and surfing
• Why I coach with Halo Hoops: “Because Halo Hoops is dedicated to changing kids lives through sports, with Christ as their leader.  This is my goal as a coach also, for Christ to lead me in instructing kids to become better family, business and community leaders.”
